Toronto Taste Chef Challenge

Happening at the Main Stage, approximately 7:50 pm

Now in its 4th year, the Chef Challenge is an exciting, action-packed part of the Toronto Taste evening. Live on the main stage, Chefs are given 30 minutes to prepare a dish from a box of mystery ingredients, which is then judged by a panel to determine a winner.

Last year’s Chef Challenge featured Chef Kaya Ogruce (Death in Venice), Chef Darby Piquette (ONE Restaurant) and Chef Ivana Raca (Raca Cafe), with Chef Ivana emerging the winner.

Watch the highlights from last year: Check out the 2016 Chef Challenge.

For 2017, we'll be turning up the heat with an EXTREME CHALLENGE WHEEL. Toronto Taste guests will be invited to select which chef they want to challenge and then spin the wheel to decide what that challenge will be. Who will rise in the face of adversity?  Who will make it through unscathed?

This year we are thrilled to invite to the Chef Challenge stage:

The Competitors

Having racked up experience in the restaurant industry since he was 17, this Chef has seen it all in New York City, China, and around Europe, but found home-sweet-home right here in Toronto! After helming the kitchen at Brockton General, Guy opened the kitchen for Bellwoods Brewery, before overseeing operations at Bar Isabel and Bar Raval. Then, just last summer, he and his wife, Kim, stepped out on their own to open Montgomery’s – serving up local fare with a Canadian flare! Please welcome…Chef Guy Rawlings!

Our next Chef grew up in Kensington Market, immersed in international food culture. She has worked in restaurants since she was 15 years old! Her training started with her mother, Nonna and Oma, sharing their passions for preserving and preparing locally grown food. Along the way, she volunteer as Market Chef for The Stop Farmer's Market Wychwood Barns and went on to become Executive Chef at Morgan's on the Danforth. She won Chopped Canada and committed to helping underprivileged youth to learn to cook and is currently meeting that goal in her new restaurant, The Oakwood Hardware Food & Drink, launched just 6 months ago — much to the delight of everyone in Oakwood village! Please give a big welcome to Chef Anne Sorrenti!

While his degree is in chemical engineering, this Chef’s true calling has always been cooking. Although his family was hesitant with his new found career, he was determined to earn his spot in the culinary world after becoming the first-ever winner of CTV’s MasterChef Canada. To sharpen his skills, he travelled extensively through Asia with his mentor Alvin Leung, as well as working stints in Alvin’s Hong Kong Michelin-starred restaurant Bo Innovation. He also apprenticed in the kitchens of Buca in Toronto. Now he returns to the heart of Chinatown to realize his dream of opening a restaurant, R&D, inspired by his childhood in Canada and his grandfather’s dim sum. Please welcome…Chef Eric Chong!
